1. Flares and smoke from the flare salvo -- fired by an overland United States Air Force C-141B Starlifter Cargo and Troop Transport, a jet-powered airlifter -- leaves in the sky a bright, dazzling-to-the-eye, white, spectacular formation with glowing "tips" that are very hot. The well-defined vortex on the left is caused by air turbulence created by the flight of the C-141B StarLifter aircraft. The flare countermeasure, a self-defense decoy operation or technique, is used to help protect the aircraft from an attack (or attacks) by deadly heat-seeking missiles.
